Learning about CAM, Complementary and Alternative Medicine

health No Comments »

Regarding CAM, Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Henry Guzman, Registered Nurse and Exercise Physiologist at Baptist Health South Florida, explains: “Complementary is anything that’s going to complement traditional medicine, so anything from food therapy to exercise complement.”

He also points out it is traditional in the sense that it has been rigorously tested through research and been kind of tested over all. And it is alternative as opposed to the combination of alternative and traditional medicine.

This term is referring to different types of exercises and diets, such as aromatherapy and reflexology.

What is alternative medicine? Does alternative medicine work? The University of Toronto recently stirred up a bit of controversy by uncritically offering a class on “Alternative Medicine.” When people looked at the coursework, which included many studies debunked by this channel, some people started to freak out. The issue highlights a much larger problem: No one is sure how best to teach that subject.

The dichotomy, however, between alternative and traditional medicine, or between Eastern and Western medicine, is a false one. We would be much better off if we could reframe the issue. That’s the topic of this week’s Healthcare Triage.

This episode was based on a post I wrote for the Upshot. Links to sources and more reading can be found there: http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/11/upshot/labels-like-alternative-medicine-dont-matter-the-science-does.html

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is the term for medical products and practices that are not part of standard care. Standard care is what medical doctors, doctors of osteopathy, and allied health professionals, such as nurses and physical therapists, practice.

Complementary medicine is used together with standard medical care. An example is using acupuncture to help with side effects of cancer treatment.

Alternative medicine is used in place of standard medical care. An example is treating heart disease with chelation therapy (which seeks to remove excess metals from the blood) instead of using a standard approach.

The claims that CAM treatment providers make can sound promising. However, researchers do not know how safe many CAM treatments are or how well they work. Studies are underway to determine the safety and usefulness of many CAM practices.

To minimize the health risks of a CAM treatment

Discuss it with your doctor. It might have side effects or interact with other medicines
Find out what the research says about it
Choose CAM practitioners carefully
Tell all of your doctors and practitioners which CAM and standard treatments you use
